If you had a steam boiler rated in BTU's and you wanted to know how much work it would output in foot-pounds you would need to know how to do the conversion. 550 ft-lbs/sec = 1 HP = 2545 BTU/hour. Or you could use it to find the efficiency of the boiler. Basic physics/thermodynamics stuff mostly.

1980000 ft-lbs/hour = 2545 BTU/hour = 1 HP.
