If a gas and diesel engine are both in good shape, and if it never gets cold out, then I'd agree with you. A healthy diesel also wins on part-load fuel efficiency, and there's much less of a fire hazard with diesel fuel than gasoline. If they both get some hours on them, the gas engine will probably still start fairly well but the diesel will start losing compression. A carburetor is cheaper and simpler to redo than a fuel injection system. You don't have to bleed a carburetor to get it working right. There are no glow plugs. All of which is why I think that gas is a better choice than diesel for a part-timer.
