Tim, When I was your age every 18 yearold man was subject to being drafted. I say man because if you are old enough to carry a gun for Samuel the Uncle you are a man. Anyway, having the draft hanging over you was no fun and there was no war going on then. The problem was not the possibility of danger, but of disruption of your life and putting a career on hold, not to mention the fact that not everyone has an interest in military life. The Vietnam War came along(I didn't have to, already 3 years into reserve service, reserve not called up then like my old unit has now in Iraq situation) and the universal draft was much despised. Politicians remember all this and absent a lot more serious invasion than we have faced in the past few years I don't see the draft being reinstated. There is a world of difference in sending volunteers into harms way and dragging off the kid down the street who is not interested in serving. A draft would be political suicide. Now, we live in a dangerous world and if there is another 9-11 type attack or, heaven forbid, a nuclear attack, then things will change as well they should. I admire your being willing to serve under the circumstances. If you go, know that you will have the support of the public. KEH
