29 gauge painted steel, galvalume substrate is better, but galvanized is ok. Measure all of the roof planes in a diagram and go to a reputable supplier and order to length (even with added waste it is far cheaper to custom order. Think about the trims and lengths to make it attractive. I recommend shingle removal, but at a minimum, break off the tabs and felt prior to installing steel. Another option is to 2x4 purlin (1.5") and fill in with 1.5" rigid dow board insulation. Good luck - restoring barns might be as much fun as a guy can have and be legal. Bill
