Several years ago we put a metal roof over wood shingles. We used 26 guage material rather than the standard 29 guage stuff. 10% thicker and we wanted the extra stiffness. If you shop around sometimes you can find seconds for a pretty good discount, but you may need to paint it sooner. Ours was a standard gable roof but costs would be similar to a hip roof. Shorter sheets would be easier to handle, and you'll need a little more trim. Sounds like you found a structurally sound building that is worth protecting. Around here there are several barns falling down in various stages of decay. Every one of them resulted from a neglected roof. I am not familiar with current cost. I know that steel has gone up.
