I just ran into the same problem with a cub. I was going to do some work on a previous welded shifter and removed the cover to find the thick gooy gear oil water and axle grease. Upon digging the axle grease out i found some metal peices which turned out to ge a countershaft bearing cage. Might want to see if there are any metal peices in that stuff.
