First of all, what kind of a hayfield is it? If it's just grass and weeds you can use roundup to clean it up. (In the spring after it warms up and things start to grow) And then just no-til in what you want. If it's alfalfa there now, you probably can't get away with that. The alfalfa plant there now has dropped toxins in the soil that will prohibit the growth of any new alfalfa seed for a year or so. Around here, there are a quite a few pastured cattle. To periodically clean up the pasture, they will plant corn for one year to "break the cycle". And then no-til in the kind of pasture crop they want the following year. Only five acres. If you're serious, you should have a soil test done. Add any amendments, get some advice, and press on.
