The trans is about it, be it auto or manual, and if it has not pulled a trailer I wouldn't worry about either one yet. I like the 3.54 gears, the 4.10's will pull ANYTHING but cost you some mileage and highway drivability, and the 3.54's will pull more that the chassis and brakes will handle anyway. I bought a new '98 1 ton 4X4 cab and chassis, one of the first with the 24V. I really don't know anything about the Dodge vs. Ford vs. Gm, but the Cummins engine is really hard to beat, good power, good mileage, and long life, usually longer than the rest of the truck.
