The original 6 volt system will crank as good as a 12volt if it"s been properly maintained. Do you have the right size of cable between the battery and starter? Over the years the cables inadvertently get swapped to smaller than adequate gauge which limits amperage flow to the starter. Every 6 volt tractor I"ve ever bought has suffered from this. Are the starter brushes in good shape? If they are worn or the starter is worn out in general it takes more of the battery to get things spinning. Another thing to keep in mind with an 8 volt battery in a 6 volt system is the ability or potential lack of the current charging system maintaining the voltage. If you"d rather not repair your current 6 volt system I would recommend you go to a 12 volt. There is plenty of information out there on making the conversion. The GM alternators work best (may need to fabricate a mounting bracket), change the bulbs in the lamps, add a resistor to the coil wire (or change out the coil)and your all set. 6 volt starter could care less, just don"t crank it for excessive amount of time.
