Chances are that your bookmark file is still around, Firefox just can't find it. Search your hard drive for a file named "bookmarks.htm" (On Linux it will be in "~/.mozilla/firefox/gobbledygook.default/bookmarks.html", where 'gobbledygook' is some apparently arbitrary string of characters.) I have no idea where it might get stored on a Windows machine, but Windows Explorer should be able to locate it.
