Anyplace that sales plumbing supplies will have the valve packing string. For that application you can unwind one of the braids. This packing material is impregnated with graphite and will not wear on the valve shaft. This comment is a bit off the topic but:If you do not think string is abrasive take a piece of nylon string and saw it back and forth across a piece of PVC pipe. We use to cut PVC with nylon string in crowed conditions or in muddy ditches by taking a piece of nylon string and using a couple of wooden dowel sticks for handles, wrapping the string 1/2 way around the pipe and sawing away.
