My Mother, who passed away last year was born and raised in a sod house in western SD. She would often tell the stories about the family being so short of cash that they would have to save up to buy a postage stamp to mail a letter. My Grandmother would raise chickens to sell for grocery money. They would prepare them to ship "New York Dressed" (complete carcass w/ insides intact) on the railroad. And the closest railroad was 53 miles away at Lemmon, SD. Those chickens were packed in wooden barrels, and hauled that distance with a team and wagon. By the time they got delivered to Armour Packing in Chicago I can't begin to wonder what shape they were in.
