My dad was always a money, livestock and grain guy when he farmed, with the emphasis on livestock and most importantly, money. He used to tell me nobody made any money messing with machinery. I have always liked iron along with the grain and livestock, with the emphasis on iron. Now he's 82 and still comes to the farm for coffee every day, after the commodities market closes, of course, and we hash over the previous day's news, including at least one money-related topic. I've learned a lot from him and even though he is in excellent health, the mind is dimming a little but I still look forward to seeing his van drive in at 3:00 every day. I almost never hear a compliment from him but I know he approves of my willingness to fix anything on the farm without spending the money to hire someone to do it. After all, when I'm home working I'm "not in town spending money".The only pet peeve I have about him is that I wish he would wear that hearing-aid he paid so much for and then left in the drawer SO I DON'T HAVE TO TALK SO LOUD.
