If your alternator is connected anywhere through that loop, it could be that which is taking too much current. You have almost certainly fried your alternator diode pack by connecting your battery with the wrong polarity, unless you had disconnected it - and it doesn"t seem likely from your post.
Don"t see how you would damage a starter solenoid just by flashing the leads wrong. Other electronics are probably protected against that sort of thing.
Let us know what you find, if only as a warning to others in a hurry
