leyland 384

i have a [positve earth] leyland 384 that i am currently restoring but i constantly have a red light on the dash and cannot seem to get the starter motor to work. i know it has worked because i tried to start the tractor to bleed it through and the starter motor was working but then i switched the tractor off and tried again but sparks were coming from the solenoid.
can anybody help?
