I've got an 89, 454 and TH400 automatic, 4 wheel drive. It's a beast. Thirsty, but a beast. No problems outside of the usual wear items, tho it is a bit harder on frontend parts and tires than I feel is necessary. Not familiar with the specific brake issue you have, but I wouldn't think it'd be that hard to fix.
