I have a little TORO mower with I think a 12 HP or so motor. I used to get backfires every time I shut it off. The solution to that is to shut it off with the throttle close to full speed. Appearantly those newer motors are designed that way. I also got white smoke occassionally, but I could never figure out where it was from. It would happen randomly, smoke like mad for a few seconds, then stop. Maybe once every other time I used the tractor. I just ignored it (for better or worse).
