While it goes against the grain for those of us who always put play before work, I would reluctantly agree that staying away because of too much work is an "excused absence." Still inexcuseable, of course, is leaving because of some perceived slight or offense to their delicate sensibilities. Hope the deepening gloom of winter will give you some spare time to re-assess your priorities ;>)
