Flue cured is sold by contract also. The one buyer that may have had auctions is only going to have one at the end of the season. If you are not near a tobacco producing region, you may have to haul it a long distance to a buyer. Higher fuel and labor costs over the last few years have made flue cured less profitable than burley. One has to grow more to produce the same income as compared to a few years ago. Many growers are using their buyout money to supplement their tobacco farming costs. Burley would work better than flue cured for a small producer. These are some of the reasons that I have not grown any for the last 2 years. I miss it, but if is not profitable, I am not going to use my buyout money to subsidize it. This is what the buying companys want farmers to do.
