At the risk of putting words in other folks mouths, I think they might be trying to explain why having your tractor hauled professionally seems to be expensive. Proper equipment, licensing and insurance is costly, and most folks are giving you the best price they can and still make a decent buck. If you can't work that into your budget, your next best bet would be to haul it yourself. I DO NOT recommend that you try it with your car. If you have a pickup, preferably 3/4 ton or larger, and some experience hauling a fairly large trailer, you could possibly rent a suitable trailer (rated for 5000 pounds, minimum). Hauling a 4x8 utility trailer with no brakes and a couple of hundred pounds of potting soil doesn't count. When you've got 5 or 6 thousand pounds chasing you down the road, things can get interesting quickly. If you're interested in trying this, and have more questions, I'm sure folks here would be glad to answer them for you. If you have to rent the truck and the trailer and take a couple of days off from work to do it, you may find that those prices you were quoted aren't so ridiculous. And, remember, TANSTAAFL...There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch...you get's what you pays for.
