Well as for the newer C6's they are not realy the same OLD C6's of days gone by, BUT you can make them realy bullet proof if ya do a littel bone yard hoppen and try and find a old C 6 out of anything like a pick up of the 3/4 ton or a police or taxie . As they had the clutch durms that would take 5 to 6 clutch disks and they will fit wright in your case . Now you can lightly beef yours up and add one more disk to each drum that you have now by taking it apart and removeing the Bellville washer that they added to SMOOTHE out the shifts . The big change came back in May 10 1975 . Myself i had nothing but problems with a 78 F250 4X4 that i bought to plow snow with and went thru 4 transmissions in 4 weeks , Plow today rebuild tomarrow . Get the truck back anda nother big snow would hit and i would be lucky to make it thru the plowen before i had to call the hook and have them drag it back to the dealer . When the 4th trans went they did not try and rebuild they installed a complet trans and it lasted one plowen . Ford said that they would not fix it again so being and OLD Master Ford tech and knew that trans. inside and out i dropped it and tore it apart and found that Ford messed up on a bunch of the C6's as they left out one disk and one clutch in the ft. clutch pack. I still had friends that were in high places at Ford at the time and gave one of them a call at corp. hq. and he and i had a long talk about the problems and what i found in this new trans . so he called the dealership and we went back thru all the old parts out of the other 4 trans. and found that all of them only had three clutches and three disk's in the ft. clutch when it was SUPPOSE TO HAVE four . Well that is when i found out that they had made this change to save money by droppen one disk and one clutch in each of the drums then up the pressure and add the bellville washers to smoothe out the shift . So being the mechaic that i am i knew that i could make it better then Ford could and had to dig around in my old spare parts and came up with not what i was looken for but did come up with a 5 clutch set up thru the whole trans , i realy wanted to go with what we had in the old S/CJ's with the 6x6x6 set up , but i did not have any of them parts left . Well after i redid my C6 with the 5X5X5 with a few other mod's that C6 lasted for 7 more years of some real rough snowplowen trailer pullen and MUD BOGGEN . It was not beyond me to do a full throttel rev. to LOW drop in four whell drive while playen in the mud or use the low to rev at half throttel while plowen snow . She finaly gave out on the last big snow storm that we had while plowen out my buddys drive . Form all the harsh beating that i gave her she ate the teeth off the ft. clutch pack and a set of new clutches and she was back up and running in a day . So ya can do a ELcheapo build if ya can find some of the old clutch drums. Oh yea . A Trans Go shift kit will wake that thing up.
