There is nothing you can put on damage to a tree that will help the tree survive. As others have mentioned, any application that you put on the tree might hurt it more. Issue is that mold/rot can be present and then sealed in with whatever you are sealing the tree with. The tree, if healthy, will heal itself given time. What you need to do is make sure it gets plenty of water (remember water the ground around the outskirts of the canopy. Does very little good to water at the trunk. The roots extend to about the width of the tree's canopy of branches/leaves and there are more fine roots in that area to absorb moisture. Also fertilize it good right away then again in the spring. Don't know where you are, but if you live in a northern climate, the tree could be in a dormancy stage now and would not absorb the nutrients now. Good luck!
