Its working fine. The alternator can only supply a certain maximum current and what you us to run lights and stereo are subtracted from that leaving a lower current available for battery charging. And while the battery is charging its current should decrease with time until it gets to zero when the battery is fully charged. With lots of lights it takes longer because the battery current is smaller. And the ammeter reads only the battery current, not the total current from the alternator. If you put on so many lights and stereo that their current is more than the alternator can supply the battery will go dead because its not getting charged at all. In that case you turn off some of the lights or put on an alternator with a greater current rating. Gerald J.
