My wife's aunt and uncle use this method with their dog and it works great. Make sure to staple the wire back a bit from the actual edge though, otherwise they may not be able to get within 4 feet or so to the actual line you don't want them to cross. The problem with using a training collar is if the dog is bright like mine, it knows it only has to behave when you are around (or awake). Our dog will not even think about getting on the couch during the day. However, wake up at 2 AM to pee and you hear his collar jingle as he hops down off the sofa.
