If you are simply removing the distributor to repair it, and will NOT be turning the engine over with the distributor "OUT", you can simply turn the engine over until the rotor is pointing in a direction that's easy to remember, such as directly towards the engine block, or straight forward. (If the engine WILL be turned over with the distributor "OUT", you'd best take the extra time, and heed old's remarks to locate #1 TDC, and note EXACTLY where the rotor is now pointing.) Drop it back in so the rotor winds up pointing in the same direction. Also, make an pair of "match marks" on the distributor, and the engine block, so you can get the distributor HOUSING back in as near as possible to it's original location, too. That should get the timing close enough to get the engine to run, then finish up with a timing light.
