If you ground to the tractor with either side from the jumper vehicle (pos or neg your choice), then jump direct to the starter lug it's gonna spin the starter. This way you isolate voltage sensitive components from the 12V source. Now the starter is gone start spinning soon as the connection is made. Just make sure you got enough "juice" in the tractor battery to provide ignition spark. You'll have to disconnect the jumper to stop the starter.
6V starters are in fact built more heavy duty than 12V units. If you don't keep grindin on it till the armature starts slinging solder it'll last for many years under 12V.
