I've heard of it, but have never seen it. Because of where this one broke I don't think that was your problem. When a crank fails at or near the very front (especially on a "fresh rebuild") it it usually because the damper was not properly installed. Some times there is a problem in the accesory drive also. Often when engines are rebuilt the crank used won't be the same one that came out of the engine cause the original was offered as a core for a "kit". Often stationary engines like are used in generators have bit different balance factor than a truck engine, and so use a different damper. Those "Silver 92" series Detroits don't have the world's best reputation for reliability in trucks but make great pump and generator units.
At least it ain't yore money down the tube.
