Where I used to work in the early 80's they had a skidloader that broke the crankshaft on the Continental engine. This had happened more than once and they decided to do something else. Two guys from the maintenance department went to the Auto Boneyard with a tape measure. They came back with a Ford Pinto 1.6L four cylinder. This cost less than a reground crank for the Continental. It fit right in with some rebuilt motor mounts. The only problem was that it had no governor and was difficult to control. They solved that problem by getting a belt drive governor like they used to put on combines and swathers. Then it worked like a dream.
