Quick-couplings on GM heater hoses?

I know this is O/T, but I need to get a heater core replaced in a "91 Caprice ASAP. The steel lines coming off of the heater valve have a black plastic coupler at the end, the tubes from the heater core plug into these and are locked in place by a white plastic piece. It looks like you just simply push the tabs of the white plastic piece together and the whole thing pulls apart. I cannot for the life of me get that thing totally squeezed together. It doesen"t help that there isn"t much room to work. Is there a tool for these or a trick to getting them apart? If so where can you get the tool? Is it somthing you can walk right into NAPA and buy, or do you have to wait a week for the Snap-On man to order one in?
