What do you mean by "seems to be getting fuel to the injectors?" Did you unhook an injector line and look?
A diesel needs enough compression to create ignition, air, and enough fuel at the correct time - in order to fire. Since your's was running, but slowly died - without any tragic events inside the engine that you know of - it's likely you've simply got some injection pump problems - especially with your Roosamaster/Stanadyne rotary-type pump. Unless it's been updated, that pump is prone to failure - which results in the engine slowing down, and then crapping out. Usually, it will start right up again after shut-down - until the pump-housing over-pressurizes and it again, craps out.
The common failure point is the rubber/plastic vibration dampener on the governor flyweight ring. When it falls apart, it plugs the fuel-exit fitting on top of the pump. Yanking the fitting out and running it without is a good test (but a little sloppy). If this seems to be your problem, you can either rebuild the pump completely - or just fix what is wrong. To just reseal the pump and replace the failed hunk of plastic - parts cost is around $20 - and it takes about two hours to take the pump all apart, and put it back together (I'm not including removal and re-installation of the pump). You can also update - and elimate the plastic with a new EID kit - for an extra $40.
Your problems could also be elsewhere - but that pump is known for the problem I described. It was used by Deere, IH, Ford, AC, Case, and many other tractors as well as Ford and Chevy trucks until the mid-80s. Around 85 or 86 - the new EID was installed as OEM.
