First off you need to realize that super singles are not all made alike.
This is why you get some people that say they are a piece of doggie doo and others think they are the best tire made.

First there is a true Super Single. This is the single tire that has been around for years and you can tell them by the slight curve to the thread when looking at it from behind the truck. When empty only the center of the tire is touching the ground. These things are a death trap and I hate them because of wheel spin in the rain.

The other type of single tire out there is the Michelin X one tire. Other manufactures may make a similar tire but our company buys 100% Michelin so I know these tires. We have got our fleet at about 98% single tires now and run at least 40 states. We have had a few minor problems but nothing more than any normal tire. The main problem is finding a tire on the spur of the moment. They are not well stocked at tire stores. I keep a good used tire around for that just in case moment. We have never gotten a flat that could not make it back to the yard with the help of a air hose. We have blow 1 tire that caused a road call but I think the driver was running with a nail and low tire and did not want to take the time to get it fixed. He was just adding air and the tire was tearing up from running low on air sometimes.
If you want to see one of these tires in action or talk to a driver that uses them look for gas haulers. Pilot; Flying J; and even now Petro use these tires.
We buy or trucks and trailers with normal width axles so the tires do not stick out as far but we still have good; roll over resistance; traction; and they handle well.
My P&L statement does not break down tires per tire so I can not comment on cost but have heard they are cheaper than 2 similar tires. Yes you can probably buy 2 Yocahoma tires cheaper than the X one but if you compare Michelin to Michelin I think the single tire is less.
One thing I can tell you from experience is that you need to keep your trailer tracking correctly. A off track trailer wears to one side and you will be replacing otherwise good tire because of this at the expense of 2 tires.
