If it has the cast iron transfer case, which it should, it could be a linkage adjustment.
They have a goofy double linkage setup. You move the lever and both linkages move. I"ve seen em where one gets real worn, out of adjustment or the nut comes loose on the transfer case. I"ve also seen em get all gunked up. They"re kind of a pain to adjust. I"d probably pull the whole shifter assembly off, clean it up good, spray everything with your favorite penetrating oil and keep working it.
It"s been awhile since I`ve worked on one but if I remember right that`s just about what can happen.
To tell, figure out which linkage is your mode fork. Have someone in the truck(safety first)move the lever ahead toward 2 high. Watch which linkage moves ad give it a little help with a bar. See if that pops it back int 2 high.
Of course if it`s an aluminum transfer case, disregard all this. (probably should`ve put this disclaimer on top, now its too late.)
