Most people overfeed horses, and of course, a horse will eat himself to death given a chance. The nutritional value of feed such as oats or corn is so much greater than hay or grass that a little goes a long way. When we were showing horses years ago and riding them at least 5 hours a week, our rule of thumb was to have the last rib or two showing. However, most people believe that if you can see a rib on anything, then it must be close to starving.
