taking and posting a photo

hi folks,
I was going to put my old tractor up for sale, on the photo board. But the only photos I have are 300 and some kilobytes and I noticed that the photos there were really good photos, and they were only about 10 kB.so I was wondering how the heck you get about taking the picture, and then squeezing it down. Mine are in JPEG mode, but I don't seem to be able to get them any tighter. what physical size should I use for them anyway? any help, you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Best wishes, Tom
