OT---Question about trees/horses

I planted a bunch of young hemlocks in different areas in my pasture last week. I let the neighbor guy run his horses in my pasture. He has little kids that play out there too. Last night, found every one of the trees uprooted and thrown off to the side. These trees are only 2-3 ft. tall and shallow roots. There were no teeth marks, no needles nibbled off, etc....in other words does not look like horses did this. My question is does this sound like the work of horses, am I missing something?
