Sounds like your lumber is still green. If so once it is
nailed to the barn you'll experience "signifigant
shrinkage" (of your boards). If you nail them at the
edges they may spit.. Nail them with one nail in the
center until they are good and dry then nail the edges
and put on your batten. If you put them up almost
touching you will end up with a pretty good gap
between them when dry.
Another tip, keep checking to see that they are plumb.
They have a tendecy to become further and further out
of plumb as you go down the side of your barn and you
won't notice until you get back away from it.
