The "parking pawl" and the mechanism that engages it can all be serviced by dropping the tranny pan. On the other hand, if the toothed wheel the pawl engages is badly damaged, the tranny must come down and completely apart. Sometimes, what you are experiencing can be caused by 2 bolts coming loose which hold part of the "apply" mechanism to the tranny case. Also, a spring can break. Drop the pan, and have a (oily) look up at the park apply mechanism.
