MOST tractors just have 2 wires that go to the guages, a + and -. One goes to the sender unit-either fuel, temp, or whatever. The other is from the battery, through the ignition switch. You can take the wire to the sender and ground it out, or use a jumper wire and ground out the guage.

If the needle pegs, it's the sender unit.

If the needle doesn't move, it's the guage.

I say MOST because the after market look-a-like guages in my 1600 have 3 or 4 wires. It's a bit confusing at first how to hook them up but after calling the company I bought them from it was a snap.
