12 is definitely tougher on the starter, but not that tough. More often the excuse for going to 12 is that it won't crank good on 6 volts. When the true reason is that the starter bearings, bendix, and brushes are already worn out and simply FIXING the 6 volt starter and making sure the battery and connections were good would have made it spin just fine.
