generator on JD 50

The generator has been rebuilt and had a new 4 post regulator one year ago, and it is not charging again. How do I test to see if it is the generator or the regulator?
When I was a little kid Dad had a gas 70 JD, and every once in a while he would take a piece of electrical wire and hook it in the generator or regulator area. That would make it charge until he unhooked the wire again. What post would he have been hooking it too?
