I spent years in AZ and NM throwing away thermostats, and never had a problem...until I said so on one of these posts, and someone sent me a link to an engine manual which said that without a thermostst the water wouldn't circulate correctly in that engine (I can't recall which make it was!!) but the answer is yes, some engines do need one. But how long did you run it before it began overheating?? If you ran it for a couple of weeks or a couple of months, and it just began overheating, it's probably something else. (Have you shined a light thru the fins to make sure its not half clogged with dirt, leaves and grasshoppers??) Good luck.
