My buddy's had a bad time with kidney stones this last month. Then my mother gave him a big bunch of stewed beets and beet pickle because had left her a supply of bass fillets. He feasted on the fresh beets, but his first night-time visit to the bathroom nearly produced a heart attack! He thought he was bleeding, and that his kidney stone had returned. Eventually he realized that it was just the beets.

His report of this greatly amused my 80-year-old mother.
