I own a 1974 sears st12 and mine smokes also. If your smoke is black and it miss fires then you need to adjust the neddle (it is on the bottom of the floatbowl, DONT TURN THE NUT). If it is blueish smoke you need to replace the rings on the piston (blue smoke means that you are burning a little oil.) Also mine smokes real bad when i start it up for the first time in the morning, but if you run it for a little while the smoke will go away. Also DO NOT start the engine then put it in full throttle, let it idle for about 5 minutes. Oh and yes it is worth saving. We own a new JD L120 with a 20hp Briggs and my sears will out pull the JD. You cant get a tractor like this anymore. Also the ST-12 is very rare they didnt make very many like they did the SS series. Hope this helped.
