Draft control is designed off of the Furgeson system. If your tractor hits something hard when plowing the top link will activate a plunger that will make the implement raise in increments until forward progress is obtained and the pressure is released off of the plunger and the plow is again lowered to the preset depth. A direct three point will simply raise and lower a three point implement. A good example of this is the IH 300 Utility. It has a single hydraulic cylinder to raise the arms of the 3pt but it will stay where you put it until you manually raise it. For getting through the tough spots, IH used a Torque Amplifier. The TA will drop your ground speed by lowering the gear without having to use the clutch and supposedly bull your way through the hard spot. The main advantage of the draft control is it automatically returns to the preset depth. With the TA, if you had to raise it up you would have to reset the depth each time. The main drawback of draft control is a possible lack of uniform depth to the furrow. Also, if using a bush hog on 3pt and you get the mower in a bind, the tractor may decide to start raising the hog with the blades still spinning making for some raised eye brows for the operator and any possible bystanders. This is a general overlook, others will have some more input.
