I suggest that they are either forged or cast steel. Either welds wonderfully with MIG, TIG, or proper electrode. Take a piece of known cast iron and a piece of known steel, touch each to ginding wheel and look at the sparks. The cast iron will have short red sparks that burst. The steel will have longer yellow sparks. Then test the arms the same way.
