I suspect Ford picked 540 RPM as it was a convenient speed for the second shaft in their three speed transmission in the 2N. Because that's how the PTO worked on that tractor, it was simply an extension of that secondary transmission shaft. Every maker has some different gear ratio between the engine and the PTO shaft. The proper engine speed for PTO operation is generally marked on the tachometer. Initially Ford used 1-1/8" 6 spline for 540 but the rest of the world used 1-3/8" 6 spline. You get more horsepower for the same torque at 1000 rpm. If the 60 could supply the power needed by the 6' mower, it would work as well as on the 4020 with either speed PTO on the 4020. Though the 6' mower might a bit heavy to pick up with the 60 and keep the front wheels on the ground. Gerald J.
