Had a Chevy S-10 one time that came with one in it. I could never tell the difference in performance or mileage. As someone else noted, suspect the reduced restriction is only beneficial at high RPM, particularly with electronic engine controls which measure the actual air flow.

Check out some of the diesel pickup sites. Diesels do respond well to lower flow restriction, so there's always some discussions of low restriction air filters. I recall a couple citations of studies that showed filters like the K&N let noticeably more dirt through than a standard paper filter. Whether that would be a problem in your situation or not is hard to tell. If you never drive on dirt roads & live in an area where there's not a lot of dust, you might get away with a K&N with no problems. Who knows....
