So long as hp requirements remained under 60hp, the two cylinder design could generate enough power. However, by as early as 1950, management at John Deere became aware that hp requirements would soon rise to above 100hp. In order for a two cylinder design to reliably generate that kind of power, it would have to have cylinders of a huge diameter, making the engine far too wide.

Also, the tooling to build the two cylinders was getting old and would soon have to be replaced. The shift to four and six cylinder engines, therefore was a natural and logical developement.
