Robert, If thats a One Wire Alternator as your post suggests, its output wires to the Load (NOT to battery/starter) side of the ammeter. That same Load side ammeter terminal is what provides input voltage to loads like the BAT input terminal on any light or ignition switches. The ammeters other Supply side terminal gets fed from the hot ungrounded battery post, usually via the big batery cable terminal on a starter switch. From the IGN output terminal on the ignition switch should first be the external Ballast Resistor (assuming you have one) and then the coils high side input terminal, which should be + on a Negative grounded tractor. The coils other - terminal is what wires to the distributor. If youre running the original 6 volt coil and an external ballast resistor, the ballast normally gets quite hot but the coil should only be warm. If the ballast is wired correct in series before the coil AND IF ITS THE CORRECT OHMS RESISTANCE, the coil shouldnt be so hot you cant lay your hand on it, only warm as mentioned. This all assumes you mean its the Ballast thats hot instead of any light switch resistors, is that what you meant?????? If you used to have a genny with a 2 wire cutout relay and the light switch field current control system, that resistor/terminal should not be used if you changed to an alternator. This also assumes its a One Wire alternator as you indicated and it was converted to negative ground as most all alternators are. Let us know, best wishes n God Bless, post back any questions John T
