They were also referred to as "suicide knobs" back in the '50s and '60s and we had them on cars. They were known to break thumbs and wrists if you hit a curb and the wheel would snap back the opposite way. (Hence the unpopular nomenclature.) You could buy them with all sorts of designs. At that time, my favorite was a skull. Can't tell you where they originated, though. Good luck on your research. Chuck
